March For Parks
Saturday, April 30, 2011

Each year, the Friends of Makoshika host Makoshika March For Parks.  March for Parks, part of National Parks Week, is the nation’s largest grassroots event for parks and open spaces and the longest-running annual nationwide Earth Day event.
At Makoshika State Park, an annual 4.4-mile walk raises awareness of the importance of open spaces and raises funds for park improvements and interpretive programs at Makoshika State Park.  March participants collect pledges from their communities, which are donated to the park on the day of the march.
The march begins and ends at Makoshika’s group use shelter, located one-half mile inside the park.  The turnaround point of the march is the top of the switchbacks, located two miles inside the park.
All participants in the march receive a certificate of participation, and prizes are awarded to the marchers who collect the most pledge money.  The Glendive Kiwanis Club provides a free hamburger lunch to the marchers.  The hamburger lunch is available for $2.50 for non-participants.

Buzzard Day

Saturday, June 11, 2011

Each Summer, Makoshika State Park celebrates the return of the Turkey Vulture to eastern Montana with Buzzard Day, a tongue-in-cheek day of appreciation for one of "nature's cleaners."  Makoshika's badlands topography provides excellent habitat for turkey vultures, a species of special concern because of its breeding requirements and its position in the food chain (carrion eaters ingest toxins carried throughout the entire food chain).

Buzzard Day has events for all age groups, including nature walks, an 8K Buzzard Run, festival games, music and food.  Each year, new events are added.  Park admission is free.
The day-long event ends with Music In Makoshika, a free musical concert held at the park's Hiatt Amphitheater.

Music In Makoshika

Music In Makoshika has traditionally been an annual summer musical performance series at Makoshika State Park.  Currently, Music In Makoshika is provided as a capstone event of Buzzard Day and is held in the park's Hiatt Amphitheater, a natural outdoor amphitheater nestled with the pines that blanket the northern exposures of the park's upper plateaus.  The Hiatt Amphitheater has recently been renovated, including new terraces, benches, stage, lighting, dressing room, and restroom facilities.  The musical series will include classical, rock, and country music performances.  Please contact Makoshika State Park for more information on Music In Makoshika.
