Project Overview
The project to have three schools monitor an aquatic environment in their area and share the data collected as these environment change is a unique opportunity. The choice of each of the sites is also unique in that each site has a wetlands in a state of change. Roundup has an old sewer lagoon that will be converted into a grassy wetlands by the Montana Department of Transportation , Harlowton has an old sewer lagoon that is to have the sewage farmed out and a new sewer lagoon to be used in its place. Ryegate has and existing wetlands that changes with more natural factors as a site for comparison There are many benefits to the manner in which this project is implemented. The inclusion of schools and students to collect, interpret, and analyze data will give a broad base of support for the project to continue after the first year. The students will gain a better understanding of one aspect of the environment in which they live and this will allow them to make more educated choices as adults. The protocols developed to collect, interpret, analyze and present data on these wetlands can be used for other environments and in other communities. By having the people (teacher, students, experts) work together on this project, the final presentations will have both the local interests and the interest of the larger community expressed. The end result will be a better educated and informed communities.
