Chapter Nine:
Warren Miller
My brother, Warren Lenor Miller was six years younger than I. He was born November 17, 1923 on our farm, 20 miles south of
Poplar in section I, T25N, range 51E. His birth was attended by a mid-wife, Mrs.
Muriel Lattay.
He attended Lone Ridge country school for the first few years of his
education, the same school I attended just 2 ¼ miles from our place. My folks
moved from the farm to Fort Peck due to the drought in 1934 so my brother
attended the rest of his grade school in Wheeler, Montana, a construction town
close to Fort Peck. My parents transferred to Ronan when Fort Peck Dam was
finished and so Warren graduated from Glasgow High School in 1941. He was drafted into the
army in 1942 and served in the armed services in England and France during WWII.
And when he was discharged he took advantage of the G.I. Bill of Rights and went
back to college for five years to earn his master's degree in sociology. After
college graduation he moved to California and got into the medical supply
business along with real estate business. He spent several years in San
Francisco area and later moved to Los Angeles where he owned a printing shop
to make his living.
Warren never liked the farm and wasn't attached to animals the way I was. He
would ride his bicycle when rounding up the cows to bring them home just to
avoid riding a horse. The pasture had many hills and a lot of cactus. He had a
flat tire almost every time he went out after the cows. We were very opposite in
many respects. He liked the city and all that went with living there and I like
the farm with all the conditions that went with that life. I'm sure he was
happy, but I am much more satisfied living in the country.
