Long Distance Carrier Information

Preferred Carrier Selection

You are allowed to select your long distance carrier for 1+ long distance dialing for Intralata and/or Interlata/International calls. To do so, download and print the Preferred Carrier Selection Form, which also includes a list of carriers.  The charge for changing long distance carriers is $5.50.

Preferred Carrier Freeze

In today's competitive telecommunications environment, a significant problem known as "slamming" has developed in which the telecommunications companies chosen by subscribers are changed without their consent.

In order to minimize the expense and inconvenience which may result from "slamming", Mid-Rivers will offer its subscribers the additional protection of a "freeze" of their accounts. Subscribers may freeze the carrier providing any or all services; however, Federal Communications Commission and Montana Public Service Commission Rules require a separate authorization for each service.

If you choose to order a Preferred Carrier Freeze, Mid-Rivers will not change the carrier providing service without your direct authorization. This means that before you or anyone else changes your specified carrier, one of the following must occur:

1. You authorize Mid-Rivers in writing to lift the freeze for the particular service.

2. You verbally request Mid-Rivers to lift the freeze from the telephone for which the change is to be made. This telephone call may be on a three-way conference call with the carrier to which you are changing the service and a representative of Mid-Rivers. We will ask for identifying information during this call.

These actions are in addition to the verification procedures which are required by the Federal Communications Commission and Montana Public Service Commission for changing a preferred carrier.

There is no charge for establishing a Preferred Carrier Freeze or for lifting the freeze.

A separate authorization is required for each service for which you request a freeze. As listed on the authorization form, INTRALATA TOLL means long distance calls placed within the eastern LATA of Montana; INTERLATA TOLL means long distance calls placed to the western LATA of Montana and other states; and INTERNATIONAL TOLL means long distance calls to places outside of the United States, its territories and possessions.

You can authorize Mid-Rivers to freeze your Preferred Carrier on your account. To do so, download and complete the Preferred Carrier Freeze Form
