




After you decide that a grant is what your organization should be looking for, the next step in the process is finding the appropriate grants for which to apply. There are three major types of grant makers: Government, Private and Corporate. Your project may involve funding from one or a combination of these sources. Making sure the grant maker's goals closely match your own is the major factor in this step. Here are some good starting points for researching grants available from each type of source.

Catalog of Federal Domestic Assistance
A free on-line government-wide digest of Federal programs, projects, services and activities which provide assistance or benefits to the American public. It contains financial and non-financial assistance programs administered by departments and establishments of the Federal government. Published in advance of actual appropriations, so most entries are just an overview of the program and do not contain information about current funds available. "Search the Catalog" is a good place to start.
Federal Register
Free on-line access to the official daily publication for Rules, Proposed Rules and Notices of Federal agencies and organizations, as well as Executive Orders and other Presidential Documents. Notices of all Federal grant programs will be listed here. Search the database or see each day's table of contents using the Browse Feature.
Grants.Gov
This site allows organizations to electronically find and apply for competitive grant opportunities from all Federal grant-making agencies. If you are an individual looking for information on government benefits, refer to GovBenefits.gov, the official government benefits website, a free, confidential tool that helps individuals find government benefits they may be eligible to receive.
Montana Department of Commerce
Community Development Block Grants information, Community Technical Assistance Programs and other grant/loan programs for local Montana Governments.

USDA Rural Development
United States Department of Agriculture agency made up of three sub-agencies with financial programs that support essential public facilities and services, promote economic development and offer technical assistance and information. Sub-agencies are Rural Business and Cooperative Programs, Rural Housing and Community Facilities Programs, and Rural Utilities Programs. Also responsible for Empowerment Zone and Enterprise Community programs. Each state also has a Rural Development office -- visit Montana's at USDA Rural Development Montana.
US Department of Commerce
Includes grant-making offices such as the Economic Development Administration, National Telecommunications & Information Administration and Minority Business Development Agency.
US Department of Education (ED)
