Getting Disconnected from the Internet?

Follow these simple steps to improve your connection:

If disconnection occurs when sending or receiving e-mail in Outlook Express, please try this first:

  1. Open Outlook Express.
  2. Click on Tools and choose Options.
  3. Click on the Connections tab at the top of the screen.
  4. Uncheck the box that says "Hang up after sending and receiving."
  5. Click on Apply and OK.

For all other disconnection problems in Win 95/98, please follow these steps:

  1. Double click on My Computer, and double click on Dialup Networking.
  2. Right click on your dialer (i.e. ITOOL4, Connection to XXX-9638, My Connection, or Mid Rivers).
  3. Left click on Properties, then click on the Configure button.
  4. Set Maximum Speed to 57600.
  5. Click on the Connection tab, then click on the Port Settings button.
  6. Move the Receive Buffer and Transmit Buffer one notch each to the left. Click on OK, and close all your screens until you are back to the Desktop.
  7. Click on Start, go to Settings, and choose the Control Panel.
  8. Double click on the System icon, and click on the Device Manager tab at the top
  9. Click on the plus (+) sign in front of Modem, and double click on your modem.
  10. Click on the Modem tab at the top of the screen.
  11. Set the Maximum Speed to 57600. Click on OK, and close all screens until you are back to the desktop.

For all other disconnection problems in Win ME, please follow these steps:

  1. Double click on My Computer, and double click on Control Panel.
  2. Double click on Dial-Up Networking.
  3. Double click on your dialer (i.e. ITOOL4, Connection to XXX-9638, My Connection, or Mid Rivers).
  4. Left click on the Properties button.
  5. Set Maximum Speed to 57600.
  6. Click OK, and close out all screens until you return to the desktop.

For all other disconnection problems in Win NT, please follow these steps:

  1. Double click My Computer, and double click Dial-Up Networking.
  2. Choose your correct connection (i.e. ITOOL4, Connection to XXX-9638, My Connection, or Mid Rivers).
  3. Click on More, and choose "Edit Entry and Modem Properties."
  4. Left click on the Configure button.
  5. Set the Initial Speed to 57600. Click OK to close out all windows.
  6. At the desktop, double click My Computer, and double click Control Panel.
  7. Double click Modems.
  8. Left click on the General tab.
  9. Set the Maximum Speed to 57600.
  10. Uncheck "Only connect at this speed."
  11. Click OK, and close all screens until you return to the desktop.

For all other disconnection problems in Win 2000, please follow these steps:

  1. Double click My Computer, and double click Control Panel.
  2. Double click "Network and Dial-up Connections."
  3. Double click on your connection (i.e. ITOOL4, Connection to XXX-9638, My Connection, or Mid Rivers).
  4. Left click the Properties button.
  5. Left click the Configure button.
  6. Set the Maximum Speed to 57600.
  7. Click OK, and close all screens until you return to the desktop.
  8. Double click My Computer, and double click Control Panel.
  9. Double click "Phone and Modem Options."
  10. Left click on the Modems tab.
  11. Highlight the modem.
  12. Left click on the Properties button.
  13. Left click on the Advanced tab.
  14. Left click on the "Advanced Port Settings" button.
  15. Move the Receive Buffer and Transmit Buffer one notch each to the left.
  16. Click on OK, and close all your screens until you are back to the desktop.

For all other disconnection problems in Win XP, please follow these steps:

  1. Double click My Computer, and double click Control Panel.
  2. Double click Network Connections.
  3. Double click your connection (i.e. ITOOL4, Connection to XXX-9638, My Connection, or Mid Rivers).
  4. Left click on the Properties button.
  5. Left click on the Configure button.
  6. Set the Maximum Speed to 57600.
  7. Click on OK, and close all screens until you are back to the desktop.
  8. Double click on My Computer, and double click on Control Panel.
  9. Double click on "Phone and Modem Options."
  10. Left click on the Modems tab.
  11. Highlight the modem name.
  12. Left click on the Properties button.
  13. Left click on the Modem tab.
  14. Set the Maximum Port Speed to 57600.
  15. Left click on the Advanced tab.
  16. Left click on the "Advanced Port Settings" button.
  17. Move the Receive Buffer and Transmit Buffer one notch each to the left.
  18. Click on OK, and close all screens until you are back to the desktop.
