Local Area Network (LAN) Options

If you have a local area network and want to hook the entire network to the Internet through a DSL or Cable modem connection, you can use either Option1 or 2 from the diagram below.

The PC gets one internet address from the DSL/Cable modem.

One network card is connected to the DSL/Cable modem and one network card is connected to the hub.

The PC connected to the DSL/Cable modem will need additional software to share an internet address with the other computers on the network.  This function is built into Windows 98SE and is called "Internet Connection Sharing".

The router will share its internet address with the rest of the computers on the network. The router and the hub are sometimes combined into the same unit.

Most of our customers are using the LinkSys Etherfast Cable/DSL Router to provide the necessary networking function.
