CALL BEFORE YOU DIG! 811 or 1-800-424-5555
Here's how it works. Before you plan on digging underground, call the Utilities Underground Location Center One-Call service 24-hours-a-day at 811 or 1-800-424-5555. You may also go to the Utilities Underground Center One-Call website at www.callbeforeyoudig.org and fill out their e-mail form.
Be prepared to pinpoint the location of your dig site. Describe the type of work to be done and some detail as to where you are working on the site...white paint marking the borders of your excavation site is helpful.
Plan your start date and time to comply with state law, which is at least two, but not more than 10 business days after your call.
One-Call will notify subscribing utilities for you. Utility companies, such as Mid-Rivers, will come to your work site and mark where their buried facilities are located.
The following color codes indicate the corresponding utility:
red - electric
yellow - gas/oil
blue - water
green - sewer
orange - telephone/cable television
pink - temporary survey markings
white - proposed excavation
Once the site is marked, or you have been notified that a particular facility owner has nothing at your dig site, you can begin to dig safely. Remember, utility marks tell you to stay at least two feet away from them. They do not mean dig here!
To protect property, prevent personal injuries and avoid lawsuits, call toll-free 811 or 1-800-424-5555 24-hours-a-day. Remember, if you cut telephone wires, you not only affect local residential phone service, but you cut off vital lifeline communications services to the medical, emergency and law enforcement personnel.
